Armour Landscape Centre: Sod Installation Guide
Important:
Sod should be laid as soon as possible, no later than 24 hours after delivery or pickup.
Yard Preparation
- Clear the area: Remove all debris, rocks, and weeds.
- Grade and shape: Contour the soil to your desired landscape design.
- Topsoil: Ensure topsoil is available to a depth of 8–10 cm. Add quality topsoil if needed to build up the soil.
- Soil condition: If topsoil is compacted or hard, rototill thoroughly to loosen it.
- Fertilization: Apply starter fertilizer at a rate of 10 kg per 100 sq. meters and rake it into the soil.
- Leveling: Smooth and even out the surface using a sod roller to remove minor depressions.
- Sod Installation Starting point: Begin the first row along a straight edge, such as a fence, driveway, or curb. Alternatively, run a string line along the center of the area to guide placement.
- Laying sod: Unroll and place sod in a brick-work pattern, staggering joints to reduce seams.
- Cutting and fitting: Trim sod with a sod knife as needed, ensuring all edges fit tightly without overlapping.
- Rolling: Use a sod roller to press the sod firmly into contact with the soil.
- Watering: Immediately water the newly installed sod thoroughly. Ensure the soil is wet to a depth of 1 inch (2.5 cm) beneath the sod.
- Measuring water: Use a Frisbee to measure water coverage (holds 1 inch/2.5 cm of water). Move the sprinkler to a new area once the Frisbee is full to ensure even watering.
- Maintenance Tips
- First 2 weeks: Water daily to keep soil moist. Avoid puddling.
- After establishment: Gradually reduce watering frequency while increasing depth to encourage deep root growth.
- Mowing: Wait until the grass reaches 6–8 cm before the first mow; cut only the top third.
- Fertilization: Follow up with regular fertilization to maintain healthy growth.
